'Plan of the great antient & famous citty of York delineated by Capt. James Archer one of His Maties. Ingenniers.'
Comments on map:
Recorded from photographic copy of uncertain provenance, BM RD green 13:10:1947. Everything is in plan except the windmills, but, despite the scale, field boundaries outside the built-up parts are as far as possible made straight or at right-angles, and there seems to be 'smoothing' and 'straightening' of streets, too. Note above title, 'By His Maties Spetiall Commands'. Notes on bridges, distances from walls, etc: very much military-oriented. Copy evidently reduced: dimensions appropriate for 1:3600.
