Comments on map:
For Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, Vol II, London: Chapman & Hall, 1844, as map 166. The map seems to be either a very close copy of the Arrowsmith map of 1834 [Exeter 20209], which in turn derives directly from the Beilby map of 1824-8 [Exeter 20210], or else is the same plate, reduced in size and with title, vignettes, etc reengraved. Scale measured as 1.78 inches to 0.25 mile, 1:8898, so 1:8800 adopted (as with Arrowsmith).
