Comments on map:
Main record applies to C.14/12, which has Alger's attribution below scale. DA 1/1/4 has two manuscript versions with similar title: what appears to be the earlier version is all in black except for red border and some parish-tinting, 39.0 x 51.0, and omits some details present on the other two, e.g. Asylum SE of California; what is probably the later version is 39.2 x 52.2 and has, in common with the litho version, some detail in red, presumably to indicate more recent building. All three evidently derive from the earlier Liberties map [Exeter 22177], but without the pictorial windmills and ecclesiastical oddities; some of the black building is additional to that shown on the Liberties map. An oddity is that no railways are shown. The record office map-list says that these maps were prepared in connexion with petition for separating outlying districts of the borough: presumably those which are tinted? Although only the litho version mentions Alger, stylistically all three are from the same hand, and the two manuscript versions are stylistically suggestive of Alger's tithe and enclosure mapping.
