Comments on map:
In [Daniel Meisner], Libellus novus politicus emblematicus civitatum pars septima, oder Neiueen politischen statt. und emblematabuchs sievende cheil darinen das siebende ioo statt, vestung, schlosse, und slecke, so Dalingen, in Lothringden, Franckreich, Engeland und Hispanien, &. Littera. G., [Nuremburg], 1700 [no author or place of publication in BLML copy]. Top right: G49. Above 'map': 'Remedia as sanitatem servandam creata sunt.' Below 'map': 'Inficitur corvus letalum ubi vicerit hostem, At lauri solus ipse venera necat.' and 'Bann der kaab ift vergisst davon, / Dassr umbracht den Chameleon. /Dom sorberbaum brancht Medicin, / Damit treibt erdas gisst von ihm.' Mapping presumably derives directly from Braun & Hogenburg [Exeter 18464], rather than Cunningham [Exeter 20570]. This is no.9 in Raymond Frostrick, The printed plans of Norwich (2002), where (pp 13-14) he says that these maps were originally published in Thesautrus Philo-Politicus, published serially 1623-31: Meisner came from Komothau in Bohemia and died in 1625, but his name continued to be associated with the work. 'They derive from a tradition of 'Emblemata' (Emblems) described in a number of 16th century publications; the subtitle... is *Emblemata sive moralia politica...*' The verse in German is translated as 'When the raven is poisioned because it killed the chameleon It needs the medicine from the bay tree which expels the poison from him.' Frostick says the letters E.L., close to the right border, are the engraver's, Johann Eckhard Loffler, who used variously EL, IEL, JEL or L.
