It opens: 'If the reader has ever seen an unfortunate stranger in one of our busy thoroughfares examining, almost hopelessly, the square yard of paper, with its complicated network of streets and houses, which (if we except the ''River Thames'', lying like a large eel on its surface,) is the principal idea to be gathered at the moment from the ''Map of London'' before him,
