[Cover [from Hyde:]] 'Tallis's Illustrated Plan of London 1851'; [Map:] 'Tallis's Illustrated Plan of London and its Environs, in commemoration of The Great Exhibition of Industry of All Nations, 1851'.
Comments on map:
Scale measured as 2.32 inches to 1 mile, which is 1:27,310: this does not 'rationalise' easily. [Ralph Hyde gives the scale as 2.375 inches to 1 mile, i.e. 1:26,677: this is rather over-large for 1:23,760, i.e. 1 inch to 30 chains, but could be 1:26,400, 2.4 inches (or 0.2 foot) to 1 mile.] Numerous public &c buildings apparently shown, but very few are described, so that even Buckingham Palace and St Pauls must be inferred from 'Palace Gardens' and 'St Pauls Churchyard' respectively. Originally issued with Parts 53 and 54 of Tallis's Illustrated atlas and modern history of the world.
