Map title:
[1837/40 edition:] 'Laurie's plan of London, Westminster and Southwark. Trigonometrically surveyed by John Outhett. 1840.' [1842 edition:] 'Laurie's new plan of London and its environs... being an original survey by John Outhett with all the recent improvements. 1842.' [this is pasted on].
Comments on map:
The 1837/40 version (DH 361(2)) has 1-mile squaring originating at St Pauls. The 1842 version (DH361(4)) is one of the 19th century's more interesting maps. There is a long letterpress section pasted on, on the left explaining about the survey and how to calculate distance (with an engraved illustration thereto in the centre), and on the right information about cab fares and postal rates: the latter refers to a twopenny post. The survey note begins 'This Map was originally laid down by actual survey, founded on trigonometrical operations, and extended by a recent survey by Mr Findlay, for Mr Laurie... an addition of 2 1/2 miles further West, than most other maps now published...' Says is laid down on General Roy's triangulation; the main object of the distance reckoning seems to be for working out cab fares. The Exhibition of Fruit Trees, amongst other familiar phraseology, make one wonder just how original and 'actual' the survey really was.
