Comments on map:
In Edward Baines, History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, London: Fisher & Son, IV, 1836, f.p.54. On the map is a note that the Cheshire portion is at half-scale [1:21,120], 'in order that the whole of the more frequented parts might be taken in'. Outside the bottom border are brief descriptions of New Brighton, Liscard, Seacombe, Woodside, Birkenhead, Rock Ferry and Bebbington. ('ROCK FERRY. Soil, Deep Clay. Several improvements are now in progress at the Rock Ferry by building a substantial Sea Wall towards the River, & the land being laid out for the erection of detached Villas there is little doubt but this part will soon become a favorite situation for those purposes.') The general style is similar to Austen's other map [Exeter 19272], with reference tables divided up by churches, chapels, public buildings, places of amusement, etc, etc., but that to churches & chapels goes one better by tabulating the style of Architecture as well (Roman, Gothic, Grecian, Florid Gothic, Early English, Florid English, Grecian Doric).
