Map title:
'To Sir Edward Ffrench Bromhead Bart F.R.S. of L. & E., This Plan of the City of Lincoln is most respectfully dedicated by his most obliged and faithful servant James Sandby Padley, Surveyor, 1842. New edition, corrected to 1868. Third Edition corrected to 1883 By James Thrupp, County Surveyor, Lincoln'.
Comments on map:
Described as 'Third Edition', presumably overlooking the 1851 version [Exeter 18221]. Mapped area is extended west to neat line to include Great Northern & Great Eastern Joint line and the 'triangle', and similarly eastwards towards Greetwell Junction: both extensions overlie the sections. New work is often apparent by darker engraving (e.g. around the Arboretum), though printing seems to be good quality lithographic transfer. An interesting addition is the course, undescribed but with earthworks, of the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway's 'Swanpool curve', of 1857: most of this is on the section added in 1883, but the eastern end is within the area mapped by 1851 (and 1842?); west end is cut across by the [Boultham curve], east end lacks bridge across 'Delph'.
