Hill, Victorian Lincoln, Cambridge U.P., 1974. p.162: A Sanitary Committee was set up by the city council following the Public Health Act of 1848: George Giles reported by September 1849: estimated cost 29,388L: the city council was in favour, but it was thwarted by well-organised outside opposition. pp.164-7: sanitary efforts, 1858-66: p.165: 'The hillside was dotted with cesspools...' p.166: following bad state of public health in Lincoln, on 30:1:66 the council resolved to adopt the Public Health Act of 1858
