Comments on map:
Inset on 'the countie and citie of Lyncolne described...'. Scale measured as 1 inch to 190 paces, 1:11,400. Not one of Speed's more informative town maps. Note above map that Lincoln has been the scene of 'two great conflicts'. (The original manuscript of this is in Merton College, Oxford, D.3.30, map 13, dated 19 July 1607: see Sarah Bendall, 'Draft town maps for John Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', Imago Mundi 54, 2002, 30-45 (Appendix on p.44). It is discussed in more detail in R.A. Carroll, 'John Speed's map of Lincoln', in Jean Howard and David Start (eds), All things Lincolnshire, [Lincoln:] Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology, 2007, pp 58-63: the original is 45.5 x 102.2 cm, and some detail at the edges was omitted in reducing the map for engraving.)
