Map title:
'Plan of the town and lordship of Melton Mowbray. prepared by William Latham Solicitor. for the use of the present & future proprietors of houses and lands in his native place. 1871.'
Comments on map:
The following appear in boxes, bottom right: 'The origin and object of this plan. About seventy two years ago an Act was passed for the redemption of the Land Tax in all the parishes of England. During the first seven years after the passing several owners of property in this parish availed themselves of it, and by payment of a sum to the Exchequer freed their houses and lands from the Tax. The tax on the unredeeemed property remained undisturbed till the year 1870. In this year the Government ordered a new Assessment of all the unredeemed property, according to the then value of each property. The difficulty of ascertaining what property was redeemed, and what unredeemed, was very great. Messrs Thos Ward, Joseph Bishop, [Jn?] Clarke, Willm Latham and Thos Lenton were engaged more than ten years looking into old documents, and making enquiries to ascertain these important facts, and this plan with a Book of Reference has been prepared to show, at any future day, what houses and lands have been redeemed. All the property not coloured pink or green is still liable to Land Tax. Pink shows the old redemptions, Green the modern ones. This is the only map of the entire Lordship of Melton.' Second box: 'After this plan was prepared it was discovered that the allotments of land in Melton Mowbray INCLOSURE AWARD could be ascertained. The parchment award in the Parish Chest has become comparatively useless by the difficulty of ascertaining the boundaries without a plan, and from the owners of the allotments having entirely changed. With a little additional trouble this difficulty has been obviated. It will be found that the name of the person to whom each field was allotted is named in this plan, and the number of the page in the copy of the Award is also shown, by a circle drawn round it, thus (21). A copy of the Award will be found with the Book of Reference.' Despite all this, there is not much urban detail: interest is as a curiosity.
