Comments on map:
Widnes and part of Cronton: Title + 14 sheets, 1 inch to 180 feet (1:2160). It is apparent from marginal notes that there was also a 72-sheet map at 1:360. Surveyed 1875, engraved 1879, in generally Ordnance Survey style. Made under Local Govt Act of 1858 for Wigan Local Board, whose device appears at the head of each sheet. Rural part outdoes OS in quality of finish, although content is more in line with non-OS rural mapping. Broken names follow OS style, in that marginal completion is in italic, regardless of style used on the map proper.
