Comments on map:
Compared with the late 1850s version [Exeter 20416], this has been redrawn (not at all well), and the reference to buildings is now typeset and has 'Roman Catholic' as a heading. Scale is about 7.8 inches to 1 mile, but comparative measurement indicates about 6.25 inches. Letterpress advertises 'Useful maps published by J. Lavars': 1:126,720 of 1000 square miles; 1:63,360 of Bristol (ex Lander); 1:31,680; 1:15,840 in 19 sheets, plain or geological; Ashmead's map of Bristol, corrected to 1871 ('All previous Maps are of little or no service, the alterations and additions to the City during the last fifteen years having been so extensive.'); 1:63,360 geological, by William Sanders; new world map; facsimile of Hofnaegel, 1575: this precedes letterpress street index.
