Comments on map:
In the town-plan section at end of R. Montgomery Martin, ed, The Illustrated Atlas and modern history of the World, The London Printing and Publishing Company. [This has letterpress suggesting compilation in late 1840s: cf references to British statistics for 1847 and to 1848 revolution in France. BLML Maps.41.d.5 has the Illustrated Atlas section stamped at end 5 AU 51 in blue, and the Index-Gazetteer stamped 7 AP 57 at the end of the letterpress. The town plans follow what was evidently a section capable of being issued separately, R. Montgomery Martin, Index-gazetteer of the World: containing about 70,000 names of places. The town plans in the BLML copy are Aberdeen, Bath, Belfast, Birmingham, Boston [U.S.A.], Bradford, Brighton, Bristol, Brussels, Cork, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, New York [U.S.A.], Perth, Plymouth, Preston, Sheffield, Southampton and York: the highly consistent style suggests that mechanical engraving aids were employed. Scale graduated in chains: measured as 1 inch to 9.3 chains, i.e. 1:7366. [Does not show St Lukes College; Bury Meadow is 'Victoria Park'.]
