Comments on map:
Inset on Donn's 1:63,360 map of Devon, published 1 January 1765. Scale in poles (24:1 inch). Filled out to neatline with grass-ground effect. Comparison with John Rocque's map of 1744 [Exeter 18290] suggests most strongly that Donn is simply a lightly revised version of Rocque, notably with regard to orthography; the grass-ground effect in fact corresponds to the areas on Rocque occupied by the views of the city. However, W.L.D. Ravenhill, in Benjamin Donn, A map of the county of Devon, 1765 (Devon & Cornwall Record Society and University of Exeter, 1965), thinks it isn't, and that smilarities are because they are so close in date.
