Comments on map:
In Arthur's Directory of Carlisle, with a map of the city and suburbs..., Carlisle: A. Barnes Moss, successor to T.W. Arthur & Co., 71 & 73 English St and Railway Bookstall, 1880. [Map is now loose, and may never have been bound in.] Scale stated as 12.5 inches to 1 mile [1:5068.8]: 1:5000 seems to fit. Bottom left is a note that the map is copyright of A.B. Moss, 73 English St, Carlisle, and is entered at Stationers Hall, June 1880: advertisements at top include advertisement for T.W. Arthur & Co., 71 & 73 English St. The Royal Agricultural Society's annual show was to be held at Carlisle on July 12-16 1880 (cf Jackson, p.vi), and this may have been the occasion of producing both directories with their associated maps, Exeter 19898 and 19899.
